With our years experience of worldwide fishing expedition, we discovered that the fish become more alert on the big heavy lure after repeated fighting pressure. However, the ordinary jigging rods can usually not effectively transfer the action with light lures, this has greatly reduced the fish bite. To jig the light lure requires a different skill, you need to cast the lure out of the boat then jig it back in order to attract more fish around your boat ; for the heavy lure you just need to position the lure into the deep water then jig it up. The Phantom is a 5'7" spinning rod with great butt power and a light, fast tip. The requirements for the Phantom were to not only jig exceptionally but double duty as an outstanding live and/or dead bait rod. The tip not only works lighter jigs but transmits those pre-bite panic vibrations from live bait early enough to prepare the angler for the impending chaos. The longer rod length allows easier manuvering around duckboards or outboard obstacles. The Phantom has been 3 years in the making. It has involved hardcore Dogtooth Tuna sessions as well as multiple trips to the 3 Kings with different jiggers until we were happy with it's design.

The grommet was conceived more than 10 years ago because of the frustration caused by many busted leader knots, all at the jig from very big fish. The knot itself was not entirely to blame because in many cases, it looked as if it had been cut by the solid ring. The diameter of any connecting ring (on a swivel) should be of a larger diameter than the leader otherwise it might cut the leader. We settled on a grommet because the grooves of the grommet would protect the leader and it has a larger diameter than any solid ring. This system also allowed freedom of movement between jig and assist as well as some separation between them. So now the ring and grommet for jigging was born and we have never looked back. So many monster fish caught jigging in NZ have been because of this system.
